Under a Wide Mountain Sky

From Marrakech, the High Atlas appears first as a pale wall on the horizon. Two hours later, the road is following a river between terraced hillsides, and footpaths continue where the asphalt gives up.

Walk village to village

Travel with a licensed local mountain guide and stay in community guesthouses. A six-day route can link valleys around Imlil without centering the summit of Toubkal. The reward is a more varied journey: walnut groves, high passes, irrigation channels, and villages built from the color of the earth beneath them.

Days begin early. Tea arrives before the sun reaches the valley floor. Lunch might happen beneath a tree, with bread, tomatoes, olives, and more food than you believed could emerge from a guide’s pack.

Let hospitality set the pace

Guesthouses are simple and generous. Accept tea, learn names, and dress with respect for rural communities. A few words of Tamazight or Arabic change the texture of every arrival.

The trails are often mule paths: rocky, direct, and exposed to sun. Fitness matters, but patience matters more.

Pack with care

• Broken-in boots and trekking poles
• Sun protection and a warm evening layer
• A refillable bottle and water treatment
• Small amounts of cash for villages
• A soft bag if luggage travels by mule

At the final pass, look back before descending. The route will already be disappearing into folds of mountain, held together less by lines on a map than by the welcome at each end of the day.
