The Roads Between Markets
Oaxaca is best understood between meals: through clay villages, mountain roads, and the patient hands behind everyday objects.
Oaxaca rewards repetition. Walk the same street in the morning and again at dusk. Return to the same market stall. Learn which courtyard catches the late light. The city becomes richer as your radius gets smaller.
Follow the market week
Begin at Mercado de la Merced for breakfast, then let the city unfold on foot. The larger markets are vivid, but neighborhood markets offer a slower education: herbs bundled for specific remedies, stacks of warm tortillas, and conversations that continue across generations.
Set aside two days for the valleys. In Atzompa and San Bartolo Coyotepec, pottery is not staged as a demonstration; it is the living work of households and cooperatives. Ask before photographing, buy directly when you can, and give the process more time than the purchase.
Taste the landscape
Mezcal country begins just beyond the city. Visit a small palenque with a guide who can translate more than words: the relationship between agave, water, wood, and years. Tastings make more sense after walking the fields.
One evening, book nothing. Follow the smoke from a street grill, order what the next table is having, and stay for the square filling with families.
